Must Read #2: You are a Badass

This week I’m taking you back to a book a read about a year ago. It was so good that I wanted to bring it up on here and I even decided to re-read it…well, re-listen to it. There are so many incredible tidbits in this book, I could not possible touch on them all here. So, I’ll give you my top five favorite topics she covers. But, really, if you want your eyes opened and a book that’ll get you thinking about your path to success, you MUST READ You Are A Badass: How to stop doubting your greatness and start living an awesome life by Jen Sincero.

First of all, Jen is hilarious. I love her raw commentary and common sensicle wisdom that makes you think, Duh, why didn’t I think of that?? As I mentioned, this is my second time reading this book and it was just as good, if not better, than the first time. Starting with the end of my list, here are my favorite themes in this book…

5. Being Rigid

Being a bit, well, ummmm, “Type A”…ugh, I try not to admit it too often. Hi my name is Lauren and I am Type A. This is where you all say, “Hi Lauren.” Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way…there is a lot of speculation around what characteristics define Type A and Type B. But I am your typical Type A. We’re talking can’t do anything half-assed, everything has their place, I have every bill due for a year scheduled in my planner. I can’t even wear red and pink in the same outfit…not kidding. I can’t even where underwear that clashes with the clothes I’m wearing! Bah…TMI?!?!

Anywho…are you starting to wonder how this relates to this book? A brief but impactful portion of this book talks about how being rigid can actually inhibit your chances of reaching your goals. For me, this was a bit hard to comprehend. You’re trying to tell me that if I am not strict and follow every step that’s laid out for me, I won’t succeed?? Well, Sincero explains that when you’re inflexible with your goals or expectations, you may be setting yourself up to fail.

4. Gratitude

Feeling grateful? Yea?? Well then why not acknowledge it? This seems to be a common theme among many of the books I read but Jen describes it the best – “the gateway drug to awesomeness.” I mean serious, does it get much better than that? Practicing gratitude is something I am trying to incorporate into my daily life. And I’ll tell you what, when I do, I feel amazing! It’s hard to find something to complain about or be down and out about when you’re thinking about all the things you’re thankful for.

Sincero describes that if “you are in a constant state of gratitude, and aware of all the awesomeness that already exists, it, among many other things, makes it much easier for you to believe that there’s more awesomeness where that came from, and that this yet-to-be-manifested awesomeness is also available to you.” I mean, if that doesn’t make you want to practice gratitude, I don’t know what will!

3. Money is not the enemy

Yikes…this one is a tough one for me. And if you haven’t yet read You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth also by Jen Sincero and you feel like money doesn’t come easily to you, then you should, without a doubt, get reading it. And yes, I will be doing a “Must Read” on this book as well. I feel as though I’ve struggled with money my whole adult life. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done pretty well for myself. But I’ve often felt like as soon as I get ahead, something happens that sets me back. Your typical, one step forward, three steps back. For this reason, I often resent money.

Jen describes this resentment towards money is exactly what creates a wall between us and reaching our monetary goals. She describes money as an exchange of energy. I really like this analogy she notes in her book…

Money is energy like anything else, and when you’re operating at a high frequency with no resistance to it, and take right action, you can money you desire. We all know that we have to work to make money, we’ve been taught that all out lives, but what we’re not taught is that we much also align our energy with the financial abundance we seek.

2. Love yourself

Feeling a little cheesed out by the title of this section. Well you just wait! One of my favorite quotes from this book…

When we’re happy and all in love with ourselves, we can’t be bothered with the bullshit (our own or other people’s)

Seriously, I want you to think about this for a minute. *pausing for one minute* If that statement right there doesn’t get you amped up to read this book, I don’t know what will. If we could all just be happy with ourselves, comfortable in our skin, proud of our careers, in love with whomever we want to be in love with, there wouldn’t be much room for worrying about other people’s opinions.

We would be so confident that we wouldn’t feel threatened by someone else’s success or let down when someone doesn’t agree with the path we’ve chosen. How awesome would that be????

In her book, Jen talks about what several ways you can love yourself more – affirmations, spending times doing the things you love, not comparing yourself to others. But I think the one that stuck with me the most was the section titled “ditch the self-deprecating humor.”

What she’s talking about here is when we say things to ourselves (whether outloud or even just in our minds) that put us down. For example, when I include the wrong person on an email reply – “ugh, I suck” – NO! It was a mistake. Every one makes mistakes!! Another classic that I am so totally guilty of, “ugh, I’m so gross and fat.” AH! Doesn’t it just make you cringe to hear me say that about myself?? Then WHY are you saying it to ourselves?! My new motto when it comes to positive self-talk…

If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, don’t say it to yourself. – Jane Travis, counselor and psychotherapist geared towards helping women love themselves again

1. Universal Intelligence

And finally, one of my favorite topics of all time – hence it is my favorite topic by far in this book. What is Universal Intelligence, you ask? Well, it can be called many things (God, Buddha, Source Energy, the Force, the Mother Lode). But essentially, it’s whatever you believe in that makes you believe in great things, allows you to find your groove or flow, and makes you feel good about this incredible life we’ve been handed.

Jen likes to refer to this as Source Energy, mostly. She has an incredible way of describing it. She’s able to make these connections in her book that will really, and I mean really, getting you think about how the universe can work in your favor, if you let it. I’ve started opening myself up to (what I like to call Universal Intelligence) about a year ago and man am I glad I did.

I’ll be posting about this topic more and more but to get a basic understanding of this and how using source energy, you should definitely get your hands on Jen Sincero’s, You Are A Badass!
